26th PSUK Volleyball Championships, Essex

I am happy to report that at this years PSUK Volleyball, hosted by Essex Police in September, Merseyside Police were extremely succesful.

The ladies team, captained by Diane Rourke, looked strong contenders from the start, having been runners-up for the past two years. And they didn't disappoint. They breezed through the group stages, before sweeping aside the Metropolitan Police in the semi-final, to book their place in the final against the formidable Scotland West team, whom have won this tournament on countless occasions under their former title - Strathclyde. They matched the Scots right until the end of the first set, when they just ran out of steam. The second set was more comfortable for Strathclyde, who took the title, leaving Merseyside as commendable runners-up, again.
Merseyside Police mens team entered the competition with little hope of reward. However, with their ageing general, Ronnie Fletcher, majestic as ever, their team-play got them through the group stages unbeaten. Against the odds, the lads had little problem beating the Metropolitan Police in the semi-final, leaving them a final against Scotland West. It was nip and tuck throughout the final, which Merseyside managed to win in the deciding set. We were presented with the PSUK trophy for only the third time since it's inception, some 25years.
An extremely successful tournament, enjoyed by all. Thank you to MPS&SA for your kind assistance.
Both mens and ladies teams play locally in the Merseyside Volleyball League. Our home venue is Enterprise South Liverpool Academy (ESLA), Garston, where we train and play our home matches on a Tuesday night, from 7-9pm. Away matches are played throughout Merseyside on various days/evenings. We are always on the lookout to recruit new players, of any ability. We have againg squads, who would both benefit from some'young' blood. If anybody feels inspired to give it a try, then please contact the club captain Andy Martin(8366) on 7774828, or by work email.
